The Flat Track Film Crew Departs for Mexico from the Portland Airport

The intrepid explorers depart

And we’re off!

Today begins the first leg of the Flat Track Around the World epic journey—our expedition to Mexico!  We have dreamed; we have planned; we have fretted and rejoiced…and then planned a whole bunch more…and now we’re finally on our way.  After double and triple checks of bags and equipment, we loaded ourselves into a friend’s car (thanks Brent!) and made our way through the cold Portland rain to PDX international airport, where our first flight took off on time and without a hitch. Fingers crossed for a similarly hitch-free flight from Dallas to Mexico City.

Even though we’re arriving in Mexico City quite late, Roller Derby DF skater Elisabbath Bathory has kindly offered to pick us up at the airport (thanks Elisabbath!) and drive us to our one-bedroom apartment in a cute little neighborhood, halfway in between the practice venues of Mexico City’s sister leagues, Roller Derby DF and MXRD.

Though we’ll be flying in late tonight, we’ll hit the ground running first thing tomorrow morning by attending an AM practice with MXRD. It’ll be my first international skating adventure and, believe me, it will be well documented!

New website—now with even MORE awesome

We’d like to give a huge thank you to artistic director and web master extraordinaire, Theresa Pridemore, for designing our beautiful new website! Be sure to visit the site often, since we’ll be regularly uploading blog posts, photos and videos documenting our expedition. Thanks again, Theresa!

Thank you, sponsors!

Several companies have graciously donated time and gear to this expedition, ensuring that Alison, Cynthia and I are appropriately and fabulously outfitted for our travels. We’d like to express our sincere appreciation for our sponsors:

Blackstar Bags

Wicked Skatewear

Triple 8

On a personal note…

It was a year ago this month that I first started dreaming up this project and I still kind of can’t believe I’m actually on the plane to my first destination. I feel so lucky to have met my magical co-producer and director, Cynthia, and our delightful production and audio maven, Alison. I could never have gotten this project to fly (pun fully intended!) without them. Not to mention all the other wonderful people who have contributed so much time, effort and inspiration to help me make this dream a reality: Theresa, Jefferson Lee, Benjamin Doyle, Shreddy Mercury, Magic Pony Power Hour, Adam Libs, my wonderful teammates on the Guns N Rollers, my Rose City Rollers league mates and all our Kickstarter backers. And of course, all the skaters from around the world who have reached out and expressed love and support. Thank you all so much. It’s been a fantastic, if surreal, process so far and I look forward to sharing the rest of the journey with all of you.
