PRESS RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
ROSE CITY ROLLERS DERBY PLAYER BEGINS PRODUCTION ON INTERNATIONAL EMPOWERMENT DOCUMENTARY
Portland, OR January 31, 2012 – Guns N’ Rollers team captain Juvie Hall has begun production on a documentary about the global transformative power of women’s flat track roller derby. Ms. Hall is collaborating with Portland filmmaker Cynthia Lopez and an all-female film crew to tell the story of the international women’s roller derby community.
“Honestly, I’m no one in particular. I’m not a derby superstar. I’m not a derby villain. I’m not a derby founder or pioneer or teacher,” reflected Juvie Hall. “I’m just a derby player in awe of the magical transformative power of this sport and its community.”
The filmmakers will visit roller derby leagues in Australia, Malaysia, France, Norway, Mexico, Brazil, and Peru to connect with the international sisterhood of derby players, seeking to understand how roller derby affects the lives of women across the globe. Living with, skating with, and getting to know roller derby players in these other countries, the filmmakers hope to find what it is about roller derby that drives women from diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts to take up the fast-growing sport and how the sport empowers them to change their own lives and communities.
